Flying in hostile airspace costs lives

Brussels, 21 Jan 2020 (MOREL)-  Europe’s pilots are shocked and deeply saddened by the shooting down of Ukrainian Airlines flight PS752 in Iran and the killing of all on board. This comes only a few years after the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17), in 2014. It is tragic proof that some lessons from MH17 on flying into or over conflict zones have not been learnt, and that Europe has no effective system in place to reduce those risks. Having seen major airlines continue flying to Tehran in the days after the shooting down – despite the security threat – European pilots call for urgent and pragmatic solutions.

Two years after the company pledged to “reward and interact” with its pilots and cabin crew, the labour unrest has not yet settled. Press release- 2019 World Press Freedom Index – A cycle of fear

2019 RSF Index: Has a dam burst in Europe?

Paris, April 18, 2019 (MOREL)-  The 2019 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) shows how hatred of journalists has degenerated into violence, contributing to an increase in fear. The number of countries regarded as safe, where journalists can work in complete security, continues to decline, while authoritarian regimes continue to tighten their grip on the media.
The RSF Index, which evaluates the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories every year, shows that an intense climate of fear has been triggered — one that is prejudicial to a safe reporting environment. The hostility towards journalists expressed by political leaders in many countries has incited increasingly serious and frequent acts of violence that have fuelled an unprecedented level of fear and danger for journalists.
“If the political debate slides surreptitiously or openly towards a civil war-style atmosphere, in which journalists are treated as scapegoats, then democracy is in great danger,” RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said. “Halting this cycle of fear and intimidation is a matter of the utmost urgency for all people of good will who value the freedoms acquired in the course of history.”

The revised article 13 of EU Reg. 1008/2008 will allow the EU to lift the existing time restriction on wet-leasing (i.e. leasing aircraft with crew) and solve a dispute between the EU and the US. At the same time, the amendment will prevent the ever-increasing creative airline set-ups in the EU that include wet-leasing such as empty shell companies, owning only one or two aircraft, while all others are wet-leased from 3rd countries. Without this amendment the effect on both EU quality employment and safety standards would have been potentially devastating.

Ryanair base closures are a declaration of war, say pilot union leaders

Brussels, 12 Oct 2018 (MOREL)- Base closures and fleet reduction by Ryanair – perceived in some quarters as a punishment for the lawful industrial actions by pilots and cabin crew – are seen as a declaration of war to the crew across the whole network. This message comes from the Presidents of European pilot unions and associations, who met last week in Vienna. 47 journalists, media workers killed in first half of 2018, RSF says

Paris, 28. June 2018 (MOREL)- The year is off to a troubling start for journalists. After 2017 proved to be one of the deadliest years ever for the media, a total of 47 professional journalists, citizen-journalists and media workers have already been killed in the first six months of 2018, according to the tally of press freedom violations kept by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
The breakdown of figures for the first half of 2018 is 36 professional journalists, nine citizen-journalists and two media workers killed worldwide. The deadliest countries are Afghanistan with 11 journalists killed, Syria with seven, Yemen with five, and Mexico with five.

RSF is responding to these alarming figures by stepping up its assistance to journalists in distress. Almost 40 percent of RSF grants have been used to help journalists in danger to relocate to a safer place. The four deadliest countries — Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Mexico — have received a third of RSF’s worldwide budget for assisting journalists in distress.

RSF Index 2018: Hatred of journalism threatens democracies

The 2018 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), reflects growing animosity towards journalists. Hostility towards the media, openly encouraged by political leaders, and the efforts of authoritarian regimes to export their vision of journalism pose a threat to democracies.
The climate of hatred is steadily more visible in the Index, which evaluates the level of press freedom in 180 countries each year. Hostility towards the media from political leaders is no longer limited to authoritarian countries such as Turkey (down two at 157th) and Egypt (161st), where “media-phobia” is now so pronounced that journalists are routinely accused of terrorism and all those who don’t offer loyalty are arbitrarily imprisoned.

Time to get more women in tech

Brussels 7. March 2018 (MOREL)- Flexible working hours, better salaries and a good office environment - getting an Information and Communication technology (ICT) job has many advantages. Still, more than eight out of ten ICT jobs go to men. To mark International Women’s Day, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) focuses on ways to tap women’s potential in this growing sector.

“Deep-rooted stereotypes are one of the main obstacles for women’s careers in the ICT sector. At an early age, girls learn to consider boys better at learning digital skills. Later in life, they look for career options elsewhere and overlook the benefits of having a job in tech. If we do not break these stereotypes, the EU will keep wasting potential talent,” says Virginija Langbakk, Director of EIGE.
