Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 17 February 2021 (MOREL) – The Alpine World Ski Championships continue with the last four technical races. Tomorrow 99 athletes, representing 44 nations, will compete in the women’s giant slalom. Only two of the three athletes on the podium in Åre two years ago are still active. They are the reigning champion, Slovakian Petra Vlhova, who will start with bib number 3, and American Mikaela Shiffrin with  number 7. German Viktoria Rebensburg, who won 2 silver in this discipline during her career, is no longer active.
The women’s giant slalom will be opened by the Swiss Michelle Gisin, who competes in all the disciplines and has conquered six podiums this season, three in giant and as many in slalom. Right behind her, Marta Bassino, fresh gold medallist in Tuesday’s giant parallel. The Italian, who is firmly in the lead in the World Cup specialty standings, starts as one of the favourites after winning four out of six giants held so far.
In the first group we also find Federica Brignone (4), Lara Gut-Behrami (5) - who returned on the giant podium in Kronplatz after 4 years - Tessa Worley (6) - winner of the last giant slalom - Sara Hector (8), Mina Fuerst Holtmann (9), Katharina Liensberger (10), Meta Hrovat (11), Ramona Siebenhofer (12), Alice Robinson (13), Wendy Holdener (14) and Stephanie Brunner (15).
On the Lino Lacedelli at 5 Torri, a brand new track that will remain available for young Ampezzo skiers,  the qualifying giant will take place, ahead of the World Championship giant on Friday. On the Olympia delle Tofane track, the first run of the female giant is scheduled at 10.00, the second at 13.30. Same times for the men’s Fis race. (ends)
